Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus...

Since Kim couldn't leave the hospital on Sunday morning we brought church to her and had a nice little worship service and heard a good word from the Lord on the 9th floor (oncology) lounge. Later that night, since I had my guitar in her room, Kim and I sang some worship songs together - about 30 minutes in I thought - why not record our little session for our many praying friends? - since  we had an iPad handy (who would have thought iPad/Facebook/Internet would have this much redemptive value?) and since I know so many of you miss seeing her face and hearing her voice. Voila!

Before all this I asked Kim what song has been on her heart this past week and without hesitating she said, "Turn Your Eyes". It's an old hymn that was remade by the Newsboys that ministered to us back when we were both at the University of Illinois. If you have a high tolerance for bad music then check out our ghetto version. I've pasted the original Newboys song further below along with the lyrics and hope it blesses you...

Turn your eyes upon Jesus.
Look full on His wonderful face.
And the things of earth will grow
strangely dim in the light
of His glory and grace.

Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus - Newsboys

When you're dull from all that glitters,
when you're thoughts have a hollow ring,
when you can't escape from the fact you
are getting it wrong...

All your foolproof plans seem foolish,
all your status is status quo,
all your really need to know
is where you belong.

[Chorus]
Turn your eyes upon Jesus.
Look full in his wonderful face.
And the things of earth will grow
strangely dim in the light
of his glory and grace.

I was used to the cold for so long
that I couldn't feel anything.
And I shivered and stared like a beggar
who won't lift his hands.
I was numb until he touched me.
I was deaf until he heard.
I was senseless 'til I met the one
who understands.

[Chorus]

P.S. The jokes/stories have been great! Thanks for sending them in! Winner to be announced soon.

P.S.S. No Rituxan today....more to come on that later.

In His Grace,

Peter & Kim

    PS- funny anecdote (albeit late...s'ok if I don't win :)...at a Chinese restaurant, my father didn't have his glasses, so he asked me to read him his fortune. I read aloud, "A good man does not realize he is good...and, therefore, is good." In his 1st generation manner my father replied, "(grunt)...Sounds like me!" I had to explain TWICE why I was cracking up, and today when I re-tell it if he's present, he somewhat sheepishly starts laughing way before the punchline :)

  4. Peter and Kim,

    Thanks for continuing to minister to us, even during this time. Grateful to our LORD that you are amazing examples of salt and light. Press on!

    You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. --Matthew 5:13-16

    P.S. Seriously Peter? You couldn't have centered the Taylor logo any better...And who still uses a cut capo? =) *Love you guys*

  10. Thanks for sharing and blessing us. I've been singing this song all morning now (but don't sound as sweet as you two so the neighborhood dogs have been howling). In all honesty, this was what was going through my mind as I watched you guys (besides 'I haven't seen that much facial hair on Peter before'): 'Kim really is the most beautiful woman in the world.' Sure, we've been hearing it from Peter for well over a decade, but he being a man deeply in love is obviously biased. But I being the ultimate beacon of objective truth (don't mind the lightning striking, happens all the time here), officially declare it to be true: Kim really is the most beautiful woman in the world! We are daily and constantly praying for you all. Love you!

  14. It is so nice to see Kim’s smiley face again. It reminds me of the first time I met Kim. I told this story couple of time so I think Kim probably is bored to hear this again. Kim has just joined her first “adult” CEC service right after graduating from High School. At the beginning of the service, when we were greeting one another, Kim happened to be sitting right in front of me. She turned around, stuck her hand out and with her typical high energy and big smile said “Hi I am Kim, nice to meet you.” I thought “Wow, she is really excited to be here!!”

    Well, Kim is now a wife and a mother of three kids, but I will always remember Kim as that recent high school grad who was so excited to be at the service that morning.

    You are in my prayers.

  15. Ok, so Peter, first thing's first. The other day, Dennis comes into our room while I'm standing by our bed folding laundry. Suddenly, he pats me on the bottom (sorry to be graphic, but this kinda thing just doesn't happen round here!) and he says something like, "Now that's a fine A#@!" I was like, "WHAAAAAAT?!!!! What the heck is the matter w/ you?!" He goes on to say, "Hey, if Peter can say it, then I can too!" Jeez. Thanx a lot, Peter...thanx! :P Hope that at least got u smiling.

    Just wanted to chime in since I haven't yet. Of course I've been following your blog, and it's put me through the emotional ringer, that's for sure. Your family has made me laugh, smile, and cry since I've been hearing what's happening. But most of all, it's made me want to repent more and PRAISE GOD ALL THE MORE witnessing what you're going through. Seriously, Kim, I have no idea how you're able to sing after having tamponade, going thru biopsies, having that mass in your chest, and practically dying all w/in the last few wks! I know you must physically be so weak, but have supernaturally been given such strength! Thinking of you, as well as some others who've been diagnosed w/ cancer, and those who've gone on to be w/ our Lord because of cancer...and how you all have displayed supernatural joy/peace/STRENGTH throughout your ordeals...these words from Paul in 2Cor 12:7-10 came to my heart.

    "Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong."

    And, from Isaiah (my fav book and my fav son...well, my only son so far ;) 40:28-31

    "28 Do you not know?
    Have you not heard?
    The LORD is the everlasting God,
    the Creator of the ends of the earth.
    He will not grow tired or weary,
    and his understanding no one can fathom.
    29 He gives strength to the weary
    and increases the power of the weak.
    30 Even youths grow tired and weary,
    and young men stumble and fall;
    31 but those who hope in the LORD
    will renew their strength.
    They will soar on wings like eagles;
    they will run and not grow weary,
    they will walk and not be faint."

    Praise God, who is truly the light that shines through you! Praying for you continually Cho family.

    Love,
    Pearl

  20. Psalm 63

    2 I have seen you in the sanctuary
    and beheld your power and your glory.
    3 Because your love is better than life,
    my lips will glorify you.
    4 I will praise you as long as I live,
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.
    5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;

  23. Peter and Kim,
    So moved and touched with what's been shared. An old song comes to mind when I was reading your blog.

    His Strength Is Perfect
    Steven Curtis Chapman

    I can do all things
    Through Christ who gives me strength,
    But sometimes I wonder what He can do through me;
    No great success to show, No glory on my own,
    Yet in my weakness He is there to let me know . . .

    CHORUS
    His strength is perfect when our strength is gone;
    He’ll carry us when we can’t carry on.
    Raised in His power, the weak become strong;
    His strength is perfect, His strength is perfect.

    We can only know
    The power that He holds
    When we truly see how deep our weakness goes;
    His strength in us begins
    Where ours comes to an end.
    He hears our humble cry and proves again . . .

    As our pastor says, "God is good. All the time. All the time, God is good."

    Praying for you and your family,
    Phoebe (Nate Chang's sister)

  25. Hi Kim!

    I've been following Peter's blog re: your health and am continually blessed by both of your strength and unrelentless faith in our Lord. I find myself anticipating his blog updates. I, too, am keeping you and your family in my prayers.

    Here's a funny story that still makes me chuckle. You have 3 children of your own so I'm sure you can appreciate the humor of a toddler, totally honest and unfiltered.

    Sophie has been going through a phase lately where she wakes up screaming in the middle of the night waiting for some comfort from either James or myself. So on one typical occasion, James wakes up at 3 am to the sound of Sophie screaming in her bed. He quickly scurries over to her room and she asks him to sing a song to her. So in his tired state, he crawls into bed with her and begins to sing twinkle twinkle little star while simaltenously patting her shoulder. Before he knows it, he's fallen fast asleep somewhere in the middle of the song but awakens to tiny fingers attempting to close his lips together. He realizes he fell asleep on her and prob began to snore, hence Sophie's attempt to close his mouth shut. So he begins to sing again and this time falls asleep even sooner than the first time. Again, he wakes up to her tiny little fingers closing his lips shut and this time she whispers, "Daddy, go."

    ** Oh and on a separate note: You look incredible! Hands down the most beautiful cancer patient I have ever seen! God bless.

    Psalm 28
    To you, O LORD, I call;
    my rock, be not deaf to me,
    lest, if you be silent to me,
    I become like those who go down to the pit.
    2 Hear the voice of my pleas for mercy,
    when I cry to you for help,
    when I lift up my hands
    toward your most holy sanctuary...

    6 Blessed be the LORD!
    For he has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy.
    7 The LORD is my strength and my shield;
    in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;
    my heart exults,
    and with my song I give thanks to him.

    8 The LORD is the strength of his people;
    he is the saving refuge of his anointed.
    9 Oh, save your people and bless your heritage!

  38. Kim and Peter,

    I have been so blessed by your strength and your unwavering faith. I was initially so shocked to hear about Kim but now I truly believe that God is using you guys to minister to yourselves and unto others.

    In no way is my journey similar to your fight with cancer but when we were going through such hardship with Nathan's diagnosis, my never ending sadness, and WS being in the horrible car accident last year, I clung onto my faith in Jesus knowing that he would pull us through the storm.

    So I wanted to share with you one of my favorite songs by Casting Crowns "Praise You In This Storm." I hope the lyrics will minister to you both.

    Sending prayers your way from DC.

    I was sure by now
    God You would have reached down
    And wiped our tears away
    Stepped in and saved the day
    But once again, I say "Amen", and it's still raining

    As the thunder rolls
    I barely hear Your whisper through the rain
    "I'm with you"
    And as Your mercy falls
    I raise my hands and praise the God who gives
    And takes away

    [Chorus:]
    And I'll praise You in this storm
    And I will lift my hands
    For You are who You are
    No matter where I am
    And every tear I've cried
    You hold in Your hand
    You never left my side
    And though my heart is torn
    I will praise You in this storm

    I remember when
    I stumbled in the wind
    You heard my cry to you
    And you raised me up again
    My strength is almost gone
    How can I carry on
    If I can't find You

    But as the thunder rolls
    I barely hear You whisper through the rain
    "I'm with you"
    And as Your mercy falls
    I raise my hands and praise the God who gives
    And takes away

    [Chorus]

    I lift my eyes unto the hills
    Where does my help come from?
    My help comes from the Lord
    The Maker of Heaven and Earth

    [Chorus x2]

  42. Hi Pastor Peter! Long time no talk!
    I read through all of your posts on Saturday; I could not help but cry. I know I wanted to leave a comment after reading, but I didn't know how to express my thoughts to words because so much was going through my head. So this is my attempt on trying to tell you close-to-exactly what is on my mind!

    I cannot imagine being in the situation you are in right now (for many many reasons), but I just wanna say that through all of your posts about your situation, it definitely reveals to me that you are one heck of a husband, father, and pastor. I wish I had a father like you, growing up. You might be weirded out by that, but seeing your posts on facebook of your family make me wish I was part of a family like yours! I am happy with the family and the life that God has given me, but sometimes I could not help but be envious of your family. Your kids must know how blessed they are to have you! And as for your wife, I don't know her personally, but I can tell that she is an extraordinary wife and mother as well. It is crazy how an illness can change not only one person's life, but the people around them, too. I have never dealt with any situation nearly as close to yours, but I am sure that you must be very distressed. I am so glad that you made this blog to share your story, because through this, you've taught me so many Christ-related lessons. How you apply everything with Jesus just inspires me to do the same. Psalm 118:1 was also brought up and that verse is just so calming. I feel so at peace with God. As a junior in high school now, I find it hectic to balance everything out, but you've motivated me to put Jesus first before anything else.

    At church on Sunday, we sang the song, Still. Immediately, I thought of you and I wanted to share the lyrics with you:

    Hide me now
    Under Your wings
    Cover me
    Within Your mighty hand

    When the oceans rise and thunders roar
    I will soar with You above the storm
    Father you are King over the flood
    I will be still and know You are God

    Find rest my soul
    In Christ alone
    Know His power
    In quietness and trust

    When the oceans rise and thunders roar
    I will soar with You above the storm
    Father You are king over the flood
    I will be still and know You are God

    Isn't it perfect? I hope it 'stills' you (if you get what I'm saying).

    ALSO
    I want to make you and your wife laugh, so check out this video :)

    and this one is a little PG-13 but I think you guys will find it funny!

  48. Hi Kim! We haven't seen each other since the Glenbard West days, but I have been praying for you since I started following Peter's blog. It is great to see your radiant face, and I have to say you look as beautiful as I remember! I know it's the radiance of the Holy Spirit that makes it so you haven't aged at all, 17 years and 3 kids later :) Just like many others who have commented, reading about God's work in your life, and about your faith and dependence on Him has ministered to me and challenged me so deeply. Thank you for sharing your lives with us. It is an example of the Gospel being lived out in the nitty-gritty ways that at times seem so abstract and unreachable when we lose our focus on Him amidst the distractions of life. When we witness the Gospel being really fleshed out, as so many of us are witnessing through you and Peter, it is a wake up call that God's kingdom in all it's glory and excitement is truly in the midst of us, and we MUST NOT miss out on it! Thank you for not missing out on it.
    I was praying for you as I prayed through Psalms 121 and 46 this morning:
    Psalm 121
    1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
    where does my help come from?
    2 My help comes from the LORD,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.
    3 He will not let your foot slip—
    he who watches over you will not slumber;
    4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.
    5 The LORD watches over you—
    the LORD is your shade at your right hand;
    6 the sun will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night.
    7 The LORD will keep you from all harm—
    he will watch over your life;
    8 the LORD will watch over your coming and going
    both now and forevermore.

    Psalm 46:1-3, 10-11
    1 God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble.
    2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
    3 though its waters roar and foam
    and the mountains quake with their surging. ...
    10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth.”
    11 The LORD Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.

    God bless you always! Rochella (Abaygar) Ostrowski

  49. It's good to see Kim. She is beautiful as ever. Thanks Peter. You're a good writer and singer. This morning I read Jonah's Prayer from Jonah 2 and it reminded me of Kim and I prayed for her. I know God loves her in a very special way. May Our Father be with your family.
